Finding or developing your art style is a personal journey that involves exploration, practice, and self-discovery. Here are ten ways to help you create or find your unique art style:
1. Explore Different Mediums: Experiment with various artistic mediums such as painting, drawing, digital art, or sculpture. Each medium has its own characteristics, and you might find one that resonates with you more than others.
2. Study Art You Admire: Look at the work of artists you admire and analyze what you like about their style. It’s not about copying, but understanding what elements speak to you. How many art books do you own? Do you watch art videos? I'm obsessed with watching all things art related. I follow many artists. There's so much to explore and experiment.
3. Practice Regularly: The more you create, the more you’ll naturally develop a style. Daily or weekly practice helps you refine your techniques and discover your preferences.
My morning routine: coffee and art, which may include drawing, painting using watercolors, or using acrylics. That's every morning.
4. Try Different Genres: Explore different genres like realism, abstract, surrealism, or impressionism. This can help you understand where your strengths and interests lie. My favorites are abstract and abstract realism.
5. Embrace Mistakes: Don’t be afraid of making mistakes; they often lead to unexpected breakthroughs. Sometimes, a unique style emerges from imperfections. I play a lot in my art journals.
6. Combine Influences: Mix elements from different artists or genres you like. Creating something new from various influences can lead to a unique style. Don't forget to experiment with collages too. They can be fun.
7. Focus on What You Enjoy: Pay attention to what aspects of art bring you joy. Whether it’s color, texture (my favorite) or composition, let your passion guide your style development.
8. Create a Series: Work on a series of pieces (see above journal play): with a common theme or technique. This focused approach can help you refine and define your style over time. You should see my art journals. They are full of colors.
9. Seek Feedback: Share your work with others and ask for constructive feedback. Sometimes, an outside perspective can help you see patterns or strengths in your work that you hadn’t noticed. And, unfortunately, we are our worst critic. Trust the process.
10. Be Patient: Finding your style takes time, and it evolves as you grow as an artist. Don’t rush the process; let your style develop naturally as you gain experience and confidence. Give yourself a break. Don't be to hard on yourself. Play! Experiment!
By incorporating these steps into your artistic practice, you’ll gradually discover a style that feels authentically yours. Now, go Create.
By the way, it doesn’t happen overnight or with 10 paintings. It may take hundreds of paintings: months or years. It's really a slow process, so enjoy every brush stroke.
