This article was inspired by the pink crepe myrtles outside my windows.
I’m often inspired by nature. Typically, early mornings after my coffee, I will sit outside or take a walk. I'm often found walking, but today, as I looked outside my window, I was inspired. There are a few pink crepe myrtles in my yard—just beginning to bloom. A few soft blossoms have emerged, catching the sunlight like tiny bursts of joy. But most of the tree is still in waiting. Quiet. Unassuming. Preparing.
And yet, it’s growing.
I find so much comfort in that.
We’re so often conditioned to celebrate only the full bloom, the showy moments when everything is “together,” when we’re productive, bright, and visibly thriving. But growth doesn’t always look like that. Sometimes it’s internal. Quiet. Invisible to the outside world.
Just like those crepe myrtles, we might have days, weeks, or even seasons where we’re not “blooming.” Where our joy feels soft or even absent. Where healing is happening underneath. Where energy is minimal and our efforts are slow. And still we grow.
Mental health isn’t measured in achievements or appearances. It’s not about constantly blooming. It’s about tending to yourself with love, kindness and patience. Watering your roots. Resting when needed. Knowing that slow, gentle progress is still progress.
Today, let's honor the growth happening in the background.
It takes courage to keep moving forward, even when there’s no sign of bloom.
It takes strength to stay grounded when growth can’t be seen.
Like my pink crepe myrtle, you are beautiful in every stage.
Gentle Assignment
Spend 10 minutes outside, near a plant or tree, even if it's just one in your yard or on a walk. Notice the leaves, the shape of the branches, the way it leans into the light.
Ask yourself: In what ways am I growing, even if I’m not “blooming” right now? Write down three small signs of growth you've seen in yourself lately, emotional, physical, or creative.
