Recently I discovered “impasto painting”, let me share with you tools and techniques I use to create beautiful textures.
Impasto painting is a technique involving thick applications of paint that create texture and dimension. Here are ten ways to use impasto painting:
[Palette Knives]
1. Add Texture: Use palette knives to create “thickness” to give your artwork a tactile, three-dimensional quality, making it stand out visually and physically.
2. Highlight Light and Shadow: The thick layers catch and reflect light differently, enhancing the play of light and shadow in your piece.
3. Create Movement: Use expressive, thick strokes to convey motion and energy, giving a dynamic feel to landscapes, seascapes, or action scenes.
4. Emphasize Focal Points: Apply thicker paint to the central elements of your composition to draw attention and emphasize their importance.
5. Mimic Natural Textures Like Trees: Imitate the roughness of tree bark, the softness of flower petals, or the ruggedness of rocks with thick paint applications.
6. Express Emotion: Convey intense feelings and mood by using vigorous, bold strokes and rich textures, adding an emotional depth to your artwork.
7. Create Abstract art: Use impasto to build up layers and textures in abstract compositions, making them visually captivating, unique and beautiful.
8. Enhance Color Vibrancy: Thick layers of paint can make colors appear more vivid and intense, adding richness and depth to your work.
9. Add Depth to Backgrounds: Use impasto techniques to create textured backgrounds that give depth and interest without detracting from the main subject.
10. Combine with Mixed Media: Incorporate impasto with other techniques, mediums or materials, such as collages or found objects, to create complex, multimedia artworks.
Hangout with an artist friend who can teach you various styles and techniques of painting. Here I'm hanging out with Mari Ann who's an artist I enjoy painting with in her home art studio.
